About us
Developing Lives, Livelihood & Nutrition – Uganda (DLLN-Uganda) stands as a cornerstone of community-led development in East Africa. Originally established in 1993 under the name Dolenffermio – Uganda, the organization has spent over three decades evolving alongside the shifting socio-economic landscape of the nation. Our foundational mission is to "End Poverty, Hunger, Improve Health & Education, making Communities more sustainable as they combat Climate Change." This mission is driven by a singular, ambitious vision: to foster a Uganda where every household has attained food security and possesses reliable access to affordable, high-quality healthcare.
Our History and Evolution
The transition from Dolenffermio – Uganda to DLLN-Uganda reflects our growth from a localized initiative into a nationally mandated organization. Throughout our history, we have recognized that the challenges of rural poverty are deeply intertwined with agricultural productivity and environmental resilience. As noted in development literature, sustainable poverty alleviation in agrarian societies requires a holistic approach that integrates market access with improved farming techniques. By focusing on the household level, we ensure that our interventions are not merely temporary fixes but are structural improvements that empower families to break the cycle of subsistence living.
Our Core Philosophy and Strategic Focus
The development of rural economies, particularly in agrarian societies like those found in Busoga, requires a multifaceted approach that integrates agricultural innovation with social infrastructure. At DLLN-Uganda, our core business centers on the transformation of farming practices. By transitioning small and medium-scale farmers from subsistence models to market-oriented agriculture, we aim to boost household incomes and ensure long-term food and nutrition security. This approach aligns with global development strategies that emphasize the necessity of increasing agricultural productivity to alleviate rural poverty.
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)
Recognizing that health is the foundation of productivity, DLLN-Uganda is deeply committed to the WASH sector. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a critical component of public health in rural Uganda. We actively engage in the construction of boreholes and the implementation of piped water systems. By reducing the distance to water sources and improving water quality, we significantly mitigate the prevalence of waterborne diseases, thereby improving the overall health outcomes of the communities we serve.
Empowering the Next Generation
Economic empowerment is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty. Our vocational training programs have successfully equipped more than 6,000 young mothers with essential skills in tailoring, hairdressing, and craft artistry. By providing these women with the tools to generate independent income, we are not only fighting unemployment but also fostering household resilience. Education and skill acquisition are widely recognized in development literature as primary drivers for social mobility and gender equality in sub-Saharan Africa.
Sustainability and Climate Resilience
As we look toward the future, DLLN-Uganda remains steadfast in its commitment to environmental stewardship. Climate change poses a severe threat to agricultural stability in Uganda, necessitating the adoption of climate-smart farming techniques. We work closely with farmers to implement sustainable practices that protect the land while ensuring that communities remain resilient in the face of shifting environmental patterns.
