Agriculture Project Transforms Lives in Kalanga Village

Kalanga Village, Buyende District, Uganda– A beacon of agricultural transformation is shining brightly in Kalanga village, Malima Parish, Nkondo Sub-County, Buyende District, thanks to the impactful DLLN agriculture project. Launched in February 2025, this initiative has brought significant improvements to the livelihoods of local farmers, who were previously struggling with poor quality orange orchards, Tomatoes growing, Watermellon farming, Vegetables and banana plantations. The project introduced better methods of farming and enhanced the yields through introduction  improved banana tissues, high-quality cassava stems, and milk-producing goats, fundamentally altering farming practices and yields in the area.

The success of the Agriculture project is largely attributed to the dedicated efforts of Musigire Matayo, the agricultural extension officer. Matayo has been instrumental in training farmers in good agricultural practices, leading to a remarkable increase in their yields. Among the beneficiaries whose farms have seen tremendous improvement are Kalegere Robert, Kakoza Peter Magino, Kiirya Alfred, and Muwereza Anthony. These farmers’ successes were personally observed by Walya Peter, the Administrator of DLLN, during his visit on December 15, 2025 , he visited the thriving farmers to assess their progress and understand their ongoing needs.

During the Administrator’s visit, the farmers shared their ongoing challenges, which include prolonged droughts, a lack of ready markets for their produce, and poor transportation infrastructure. In response to these pressing issues, they collectively requested the implementation of an irrigation project to mitigate the effects of drought and ensure consistent yields.

Beyond agricultural improvements, the farmers have also established a savings group for their personal development, operating under the mentorship of Musigire Matayo, fostering financial literacy and collective growth within the community.

Further enhancing the well-being of the Kalanga community, the locals are slated to receive two boreholes with initial inspection stages already completed under the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) project. This initiative will address the critical need for clean and accessible water, complementing the agricultural advancements brought by the DLLN project and contributing to a holistic improvement in the quality of life for the residents of Kalanga village.
