From June 8th to June
12th, 2026, the headquarters of Developing Lives, Livelihood and Nutrition
(DLLN) Uganda in Kamuli served as a vibrant hub for skill acquisition and
empowerment. A select group of artisan trainers gathered for an intensive
five-day workshop designed to elevate their technical proficiency and expand
their product offerings. The training was led by the esteemed Ms. Gamba
Asiat, Executive Director of the Gamba Skilling Center in Mbarara and the
Lugazi Charity & Orphanage Foundation. Asiat, who was honored as a
recipient of the prestigious Game Changer Awards 2023, brought her
extensive expertise in vocational training to the Kamuli community, supported
throughout the sessions by Ms. Tuhirirwe Moreen.
The curriculum was
meticulously designed to provide participants with high-demand vocational
skills, focusing on the production of both leather and craft-based goods. Over
the course of the five days, the trainers mastered the intricate processes of
making open craft shoes, closed and open leather shoes, durable craft bags,
professional-grade leather belts, and traditional waist beads. This
initiative aligns with broader efforts in the region to move beyond
subsistence-based livelihoods by equipping community members with the tools
necessary for financial independence and market competitiveness.
By learning to design
and manufacture products for everyday use, these artisans are not only gaining
technical competence but are also fostering the perseverance, sensibility, and
self-reliance required to sustain small-scale enterprises. The collaboration
between expert trainers and DLLN Uganda staff is a proven model for
strengthening value chains and ensuring that the trainers can effectively deliver
the knowledge to the under privileged people in the various skilling centers.
