The Dawn at Kitaidhumba

Kitaidhumba pupils

In the sun-drenched plains of Buyende, where the dust of Busoga dances in the heat, the children of Kitaidhumba Primary School once looked toward a horizon blurred by uncertainty.

Their classrooms were but whispers of shade, and the path to knowledge was obstructed by the harsh realities of rural scarcity. Yet, a transformation took root, carried by the hands of those who believe in the dignity of every child. Through the intervention of Developing Lives, Livelihoods and Nutrition (DLLN) Uganda, the landscape of their future has been irrevocably altered.

The tents rose like sails on a dry, dusty sea, A shelter for learning, where minds could be free. No longer the open, no longer the sky, But canvas and courage, held steady and high . Beneath the sturdy canvas of new tent-classrooms, the echoes of learning now replace the silence of neglect.

Then came the water, a gift from the deep, A borehole for health that the village could keep Where once the lack of clean water hindered growth, a new borehole stands as a monument to health, quenching the thirst of a generation.

The latrine stands proud, a structure of grace, The finest in Budiope, a pride for the place. The state-of-the-art drainable pit latrine—a marvel in the Budiope sub-region—stands as a beacon of hygiene and dignity, ensuring that the school environment is a sanctuary rather than a struggle

In the school garden, the earth yields its bounty; a green, living song, Where bananas and tubers grow steady and strong. The hunger that haunted the morning is gone, Replaced by the harvest that greets the new dawn bananas, potatoes, and vibrant vegetables provide the nutrition necessary for young minds to flourish.

For the girl child, the fear that once shadowed her monthly cycle has taken flight, With pads for their comfort, they walk in the light. They study with focus, in wisdom’s own ways, no longer held back by the cycle of days, allowing her to claim her seat in the classroom with confidence and pride.

Oh, Kitaidhumba, rise with the morning light, The tents are your shelter, your future is bright. From the deep, cool borehole, the life-giving flow, In the garden of plenty, the green harvests grow. No longer does shame keep the daughters away, With pads for their comfort, they join in the play. A latrine of wonder, a standard so high, Beneath the wide reach of the Busoga sky.

Long live the vision that DLLN has sown, Long live the seeds of the knowledge we’ve grown. Long live ISU-UP, in your strength we find grace, Long live the King of Busoga, His Royal Highness William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Gabula Nadiope IV.
